Recommended Essay Readings

With the mini-assignment out the way, some of you are no doubt (I hope) switching focus to your choice of essay topic.

As mentioned in class on Friday, I have put up some suggestions for additional reading on each topic on the noticeboard next to my office door (if you're facing my door, it's the noticeboard on the wall to the left).

The additional readings for Topic 1 (Colour) come from the bibliography of the second Lakoff & Johnson reading in your reading pack (from a book called Philosophy in the Flesh). Most of these books are in the Library and, with one exception (it should be returned on Thursday), I put these on Overnight on Friday of last week.

The possible readings for Topic 2 are a list of articles in a special issue of the Journal of Consciousness Studies that was titled 'Is the visual world a grand illusion?'. As mentioned in class, while Wits has a subscription to this journal, neither the hard-copies nor the online access include the relevant volume from 2002. I will be making a copy or two available through Overnight this week, but if you are keen to get going, have a look at the articles and their abstracts and let me know (in class or via email) if there are particular articles you might like to start with, and I'll see what I can do. I'll let you know when the copies are available on Overnight.

Meanwhile, you should obviously start with the core readings in the reading pack. You are also welcome to come consult about possible further reading beyond what I have suggested via the noticeboard.
